BELFOR UK’s journey to carbon neutrality

Leading the charge: BELFOR UK’s journey to carbon neutrality
In today’s environmentally conscious landscape, businesses are under increasing pressure to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. Customers and partners alike are prioritising collaborations that both actively reduce their environmental impact and champion green initiatives.

Here, Hein Hemke, Managing Director of BELFOR UK, explains why sustainability must be engrained within business operations to ensure progress.
As the global community grapples with climate change, the responsibility falls on businesses to lead by example. It’s more urgent than ever that we find ways of integrating sustainable practices into our core operations.
The environmental impact of a business is now a critical factor in decision-making, as customers recognise the key role organisations play in shaping a greener future.
A strong commitment to sustainability
Understanding that customers are seeking partnerships with companies who mirror their commitment to green practices, BELFOR UK has embarked on a comprehensive sustainability journey. Having witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of environmental degradation, such as increased storms and flooding, the company has taken proactive steps to mitigate its own environmental footprint.
In 2023, BELFOR UK partnered with the Neutral Carbon Zone (NCZ) to enhance the measurement and management of its sustainability initiatives. This collaboration led to a detailed carbon footprint report, aligning with ISO 14064 greenhouse gas emissions reporting and removal best practices. This provided insights into emission sources and paved the way for targeted decarbonisation strategies.
Over a span of just two years, BELFOR UK achieved a 10% reduction in its overall carbon footprint. Key initiatives contributing to this success include:
● Transitioning to hybrid and electric vehicles: A feasibility study was initiated to transition its fleet towards hybrid and electric alternatives. Thus, reducing emissions associated with company transportation.

● Energy efficiency measures: Renewable energy supply options were explored and awareness raised internally about energy consumption, leading to a significant reduction in emissions. Notably, 99% of the company’s electricity offerings were converted to renewable energy sources.

● Waste management improvements: By understanding the types and sources of waste, BELFOR UK implemented strategies that resulted in 97% of the 2,048.5 tonnes of waste being diverted from landfills.

● Employee engagement: Incentives were offered to employees choosing lower-emission business travel or opting for remote work alternatives. This helped to foster a culture of sustainability within the organisation.

Achieving carbon neutrality
BELFOR UK’s unwavering dedication culminated in achieving carbon neutrality. By offsetting any remaining unavoidable emissions through the purchase of verified carbon credits, the company demonstrated a holistic approach to environmental responsibility.
This commitment has been acknowledged through several prestigious accreditations:
● Neutral Carbon Zone (NCZ) certifications: In December 2023, BELFOR UK was awarded the NCZ Silver Certification. Within just one year of achieving this, they advanced to gaining the esteemed Gold Certification in December 2024. These accolades reflect the company’s continuous efforts in benchmarking and reducing its carbon footprint.

● ISO 14001 accreditation: BELFOR UK also recently attained the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard, underscoring its effective environmental management system and dedication to ongoing improvement.

Alan Stenson, CEO of Neutral Carbon Zone, commended BELFOR UK’s efforts, stating, “BELFOR UK’s comprehensive approach to sustainability sets a powerful example of how businesses can take meaningful steps towards achieving full carbon neutrality.
BELFOR’s continued commitment to driving sustainability is truly commendable. I was not only delighted to award them with the NCZ Gold Certification, but also proud to be supporting their zero-carbon impact services and overall journey to net zero.”
Pioneering zero-carbon impact services
Beyond internal operations, BELFOR UK is rapidly extending its sustainability ethos to its clients. The company has completed Lifecycle Assessments (LCAs) for its restoration, reinstatement, and major complex loss (MCL) services.
This enables BELFOR UK to measure the operational impact of these services, providing clients with metrics such as kilograms of CO2e per pound spent. As a result, clients can opt for zero-carbon impact contracts, supporting them on their own net-zero journeys and reducing wider scope 3 emissions.
Looking towards a greener future
BELFOR UK’s sustainability journey exemplifies the profound impact businesses can have in combating climate change. By integrating environmental responsibility into core operations and extending these practices to client services, BELFOR UK not only sets an industry benchmark but also contributes meaningfully to a healthier planet.
As we navigate the challenges of a changing climate, BELFOR UK invites partners, clients, and industry peers to join them in this vital mission. By collaborating and sharing best practices, we can collectively drive the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
